What Is Heavenly Stem Transformation (Tian Gan He Hua) in BaZi?

Also called: Tian Gan He Hua, He Hua

Plain Explanation

Heavenly Stem Transformation is the process in which combining Heavenly Stems are assessed in terms of transformed qi when the relevant conditions are met. Identifying a fixed combination pair alone does not establish transformation.

The Five Heavenly Stem Combinations list fixed pairs. Identifying a pair, assessing whether it actually combines, and determining whether it transforms are separate stages of analysis.

Example

The classical text Zi Ping Zhen Quan lists Jia (甲) and Ji (己) transforming into Earth among the transformations assigned to the Five Combinations. With only these two Stems given here, their pairing can be identified, but transformation into Earth cannot be established.

How to Check

  1. 1

    Identify the pair first

Jia (甲) and Ji (己), for example, form one of the Five Combination pairs. The pairing table identifies which Stems form a fixed combination pair; it does not establish whether they have transformed in a particular chart.

  2. 2

    Then check the transformation conditions

After combination, whether transformation can occur must be assessed using the chosen method. A Stem’s existing function being tied up or changed does not itself mean that it has transformed into another element. State the conditions used when explaining a conclusion.

  3. 3

Distinguish true or false transformation and the scope of analysis

In his supplementary discussion, the commentator Xu Lewu considers true and false transformation through conditions such as remaining roots of the Day Master, insufficient transformed qi, or damage to that qi. It limits transformation analysis to the two combining Stems, rather than treating all the other Stems and Branches as transformed qi.

What It Is Used For

Distinguishing combination from transformation prevents a recognized pairing from being used to rewrite the original elemental relationships. Explaining how a combination functions requires stating the transformation conditions, the scope of any true or false transformation judgment, and the method being used.

Common Misunderstandings

Does a Jia–Ji pair turn both Jia Wood and Ji Earth into Earth?

Jia (甲) and Ji (己) transforming into Earth is the transformation assigned to this pair, not a conclusion established whenever the two characters appear. Whether transformation actually occurs needs a separate assessment of the particular chart using the chosen method.

False transformation is not the same as no combination

Failure to combine, combination without transformation, and a combination classified as false transformation under a particular method are different stages of judgment. When calling a combination a false transformation, state the conditions and scope rather than treating these terms as interchangeable.

Transformation does not turn the whole chart into one element

The transformed qi discussed here concerns the two combining Stems. It does not change all the other Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, and hidden Stems into the same element. A transformation judgment does not replace analysis of the other Stems and Branches’ effects.
