What Is the Month Command (Yue Ling) in BaZi?
Also called: Yue Ling, Yueling
Plain Explanation
The Month Command is the seasonal context at birth represented by the Month Branch in BaZi.
The Month Branch is the Earthly Branch in the lower position of the Month Pillar. Find it first to recognize the birth-season context represented by the Month Command.
Example
If the Month Pillar is Bing (丙)–Yin (寅), identify the Month Command by looking first at Yin below. Bing is the Month Stem. Yin corresponds to the early-spring position in the seasonal sequence; the Month Stem above it can vary.

What It Is Used For
The Month Command helps explain how the season at birth supports the Five Elements and provides context for further chart analysis. For example, Wood receives seasonal support in spring, but actual strength must still be assessed together with the other Stems and Branches.
Common Misunderstandings
Keep the Month Command separate from the Month Stem
The Month Stem is the upper character of the Month Pillar, and the Month Branch is the lower character. A Yin (寅) month does not mean that its Stem must be Jia (甲). The two characters must not be treated as the same condition.
Seasonal support does not guarantee actual strength
Being supported by the Month Command means receiving support from seasonal conditions. Overall strength also depends on how other Stems and Branches support or restrain the factor being examined. The birth month alone is not enough to reach a conclusion.
Months are divided by Solar Terms
BaZi months are divided by Solar Terms and do not change automatically on the first day of a Chinese lunar month. Here, the first task is to identify the Month Branch in an already calculated chart. See the chart-calculation explanation for the specific month-boundary rules.
