What Are the Twelve Stages (Shi Er Chang Sheng) in BaZi?

Also called: Shi Er Chang Sheng

Plain Explanation

The Twelve Stages are traditional labels for a Heavenly Stem’s state at different Earthly Branch positions. Their names use metaphors of birth, growth, decline, and development before birth.

Choose a Heavenly Stem first, then compare it with an Earthly Branch to find the stage. ChiBuddy’s Star Fortune column uses the Day Stem as the reference when comparing the Branches of the Four Pillars.

Example

In the stage table used by ChiBuddy, Jia (甲) at Hai (亥) is labeled Birth and Jia (甲) at Wu (午) is labeled Death; Yi (乙) at Wu (午) is labeled Birth. A Branch must be compared with a particular Stem before its stage can be identified.

What It Is Used For

The Twelve Stages provide a traditional reference for observing an element’s stage and are often discussed alongside the Month Command and rooting. Assessing the Day Master’s actual strength and its ability to sustain generating and controlling relationships still requires the whole chart.

Common Misunderstandings

Sickness, Death, and Grave Are Not Health or Lifespan Judgments

These names borrow metaphors of human growth and decline; they do not assess illness or lifespan. Appointment and Peak likewise do not directly indicate an actual office or achievement.

A Stage Name Does Not Replace a Strength Assessment

Even when Birth or Peak appears, consider the Month Command, roots, and the effects of the other Stems and Branches. A single stage name cannot establish an assessment of the whole chart.
