What Are the Five Heavenly Stem Combinations (Tian Gan Wu He)?
Also called: Tian Gan Wu He
Plain Explanation
The Five Heavenly Stem Combinations are five fixed pairs among the ten Heavenly Stems.
Example
Jia (甲) and Ji (己) form one combination pair; Jia (甲) and Yi (乙) do not. Identify the pair first, then examine its position and effect in the particular chart.
The Five Heavenly Stem Combination Pairs
| Heavenly Stem | Combination Partner |
|---|---|
| Jia (甲) | Ji (己) |
| Yi (乙) | Geng (庚) |
| Bing (丙) | Xin (辛) |
| Ding (丁) | Ren (壬) |
| Wu (戊) | Gui (癸) |
The two Stems in each row form a pair; either column can be used to look it up.
What It Is Used For
The Five Heavenly Stem Combinations help you examine whether a Stem’s existing function becomes tied up or changes through combining. If a needed Stem combines with another, consider whether it can continue to serve its required function.
Common Misunderstandings
A Recognized Pair Does Not Guarantee a Noticeable Effect
When Jia (甲) and Ji (己) appear, their combination pair can be identified. Its actual effect still depends on position, strength, and the involvement of other Stems and Branches.
Combining Does Not Automatically Mean Transforming
Whether a pair can transform into another element needs further assessment. Recognizing the pair alone does not justify changing its original elements.
