What Is Hidden Stem Exposure (Tou Gan) in BaZi?
Also called: Tou Gan, Tougan, Revealed Hidden Stems, Exposed Hidden Stems
Plain Explanation
Hidden Stem Exposure means that a Heavenly Stem contained in an Earthly Branch also appears among the Heavenly Stems of the Four Pillars. This entry identifies exposure by an exact Stem match.
Stems contained within an Earthly Branch are called Hidden Stems. To identify exposure, compare them with the Heavenly Stems above the Branches in the Four Pillars; sharing an element is not enough.
Example
Consider Bing (丙) hidden in Yin (寅). With Bing (丙) in the visible Stem positions, it is exposed. With only Ding (丁) in those positions instead, Bing (丙) hidden in Yin (寅) is not exposed. Bing and Ding both belong to Fire, but they are different Stems.

How to Check
- 1
Choose the Earthly Branch to examine
List its hidden Stems. When discussing exposure from the Month Command, check the Month Branch. This entry covers only the natal Four Pillars, excluding 10-Year and Annual Cycles.
- 2
Compare the Heavenly Stems of the Four Pillars
Look for the same Stem. Yin (寅) contains Bing (丙); visible Bing identifies exposure of that hidden Bing in this example. Ding (丁) cannot stand in for Bing.
- 3
Separate identification from assessment
After identifying exposure, consider the Month Command, roots, generation and control, and the other Stems and Branches before assessing its actual strength and function.
What It Is Used For
Hidden Stem Exposure distinguishes which hidden Stems also appear in the visible Stem positions. It helps you follow discussions of Ten Gods, the Month Command, and chart patterns. Identify which Stem is exposed before examining the relationships it participates in.
Common Misunderstandings
The same element does not mean the same hidden Stem is exposed
Bing (丙) and Ding (丁) both belong to Fire. A visible Ding does not establish that the Bing hidden in Yin (寅) is exposed.
Exposure and rooting examine different directions
Exposure starts with a Branch’s hidden Stem and looks for the exact same Stem above. Rooting starts with a Heavenly Stem and looks for supporting qi of the same element within the Branches. The two identification methods are not interchangeable.
An unexposed Stem is not necessarily inactive
A hidden Stem remains part of its Branch even when it does not appear among the visible Stems. Exposure alone also does not establish strength, favorability, or a formed chart pattern.
