What Is Indirect Resource (Pian Yin) in BaZi?

Also called: Pian Yin

Plain Explanation

Indirect Resource is the Ten God relationship in which another Stem’s element generates and supports the Day Master’s element and the two have the same yin-yang polarity.

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The Ten Gods use it as their reference point.

Example

Jia (甲) is Yang Wood, and Ren (壬) is Yang Water. Water generates Wood, so Ren supports Jia; the two Stems have the same yin-yang polarity.

With Jia (甲) as the Day Master, Ren (壬) is called Indirect Resource.

What It Is Used For

Indirect Resource identifies one type of generating and supporting relationship from other Heavenly Stems to the Day Master. It helps you examine the support the Day Master receives and how that support works with the other Ten Gods.

Favorable and Unfavorable Associations

Favorable means supporting the chart’s needs; unfavorable means hindering them. These are traditional associations to interpret in the context of the whole chart.

When favorable
Common associations include keen observation, specialized study, and an unusual approach to thinking, with an ability to investigate less familiar questions.
When unfavorable
Common associations include suspicion, detachment, and more thought than action, with a tendency to become absorbed in one’s own ideas.

Common Misunderstandings

How Does Indirect Resource Differ from Direct Resource?

Both generate and support the Day Master. The same yin-yang polarity gives Indirect Resource; opposite polarities give Direct Resource. For a Jia (甲) Wood Day Master, Ren (壬) is Indirect Resource and Gui (癸) is Direct Resource.
