BaZi Concepts
What Is the Companion (Bi Jian) in BaZi?
Also called: Bi Jian
Plain Explanation
The Companion is one of the Ten Gods. It names the relationship between another Heavenly Stem and the Day Master when they share the same element and yin-yang polarity.
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The Ten Gods use it as their reference point.
Example
For example, Jia (甲) is Yang Wood. If the Day Master is Jia, another Jia Stem in the chart is also Yang Wood.
With Jia (甲) as the Day Master, Jia (甲) is called Companion.
What It Is Used For
Companion identifies influences in the chart that share the Day Master’s element. When assessing Day Master strength, examine how much support they provide and how they work with other Stems and Branches.
Favorable and Unfavorable Associations
Favorable means supporting the chart’s needs; unfavorable means hindering them. These are traditional associations to interpret in the context of the whole chart.
- When favorable
- Common associations include self-reliance, persistence, and support from peers, with an emphasis on taking responsibility and working alongside others.
- When unfavorable
- Common associations include stubbornness, unwillingness to yield, and competition among peers, with collaborators holding firmly to their own views.
Common Misunderstandings
How Does the Companion Differ from Rob Wealth?
Both share the Day Master’s element. The same yin-yang polarity gives Companion; opposite polarities give Rob Wealth. For a Jia (甲) Wood Day Master, another Jia is Companion, while Yi (乙) is Rob Wealth.
Many Companions Do Not Necessarily Mean a Strong Day Master
The number of Stems sharing its element is only one factor. Also consider the birth season, roots within the Earthly Branches, and the support and control from other Stems and Branches.
