What Is the Life Palace (Ming Gong) in Ziwei Doushu?

Also called: Ming Gong, Minggong

Plain Explanation

The Life Palace is the palace in Ziwei Doushu that focuses on the person whose chart is being read. It is used to consider personal characteristics, habitual approaches, and overall life orientation. Read it alongside its stars, the Body Palace, and the other palaces rather than using it to summarize an entire life.

The scope extends beyond personality. Traditional texts also discuss appearance and temperament, while modern explanations often describe character and ways of approaching situations. These are themes centered on the person, interpreted through the star configuration and the whole chart.

Example

Suppose a box is marked Life and Mao (卯). Life identifies its focus on the person; Mao marks its Earthly Branch position. The star names inside identify the stars placed there. If the same box also carries the Body marker, the Life and Body Palaces share a position; no extra palace has been added.

How to Check

  1. 1

Locate the Life Palace in the natal chart

This site's chart labels the box Life and separately lists Life Palace Branch in the information panel. The Branch indicates its position, not another name for the palace. The Life Palace can occupy different positions in different people's charts.

  2. 2

Read the stars within that palace

Life Palace main stars are the main stars placed in the Life Palace. The palace supplies the topic, while stars are factors in its interpretation. Consider other stars in the same palace and the related palaces rather than treating one main star's name as a complete personality description.

  3. 3

Compare the perspectives of other palaces

Modern explanations often discuss outward presentation through Travel and inner thought and experience through Spirit. Questions about work or money also involve Career or Wealth. These perspectives complement the Life Palace rather than functioning as interchangeable personality labels.

What It Is Used For

The Life Palace provides a person-centered starting point for reading the chart. Distinguishing personal character, inner experience, outward presentation, and specific life themes helps explain why a single main star cannot represent the whole person.

Common Misunderstandings

Life Palace, Life Palace main stars, and Life Master are different

The Life Palace is a palace, and its main stars are the main stars placed there. Life Master is a separate star indicator listed by the chart, not a shortened name for the Life Palace main stars. The same star name may appear in both, but the two labels have different meanings.

An empty Life Palace can still contain stars

An empty palace, or one without principal stars, usually means a palace containing none of the fourteen main stars. It may still contain auxiliary or other stars. The palace itself is not missing, and empty alone does not establish a favorable or unfavorable reading. Further methods such as borrowing stars are outside this entry's scope.

Life and Body can share a position without meaning the same thing

The Body Palace is marked within an existing palace. Modern explanations often use it to discuss acquired tendencies and development over time, and their influence on personal characteristics. Sharing a box with Life does not make the two concepts synonyms.

The Life Palace does not determine an outcome on its own

Read its stars together with the wider configuration, other palaces, and the question being considered. One star or palace alone cannot establish a person's character, achievements, or life outcomes.
