What Is the Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) in BaZi?

Also called: Shang Guan, Shangguan

Plain Explanation

The Hurting Officer is the Ten God relationship in which the Day Master generates the other Stem’s element and the two have opposite yin-yang polarities.

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The Ten Gods use it as their reference point.

Example

Jia (甲) is Yang Wood, and Ding (丁) is Yin Fire. Wood generates Fire, and the two Stems have opposite yin-yang polarities.

With Jia (甲) as the Day Master, Ding (丁) is called Hurting Officer.

What It Is Used For

Hurting Officer helps you examine the energy the Day Master expends in generating another element, and how that output affects other Stems and Branches. It is part of assessing Day Master strength and the way the Ten Gods work together.

Favorable and Unfavorable Associations

Favorable means supporting the chart’s needs; unfavorable means hindering them. These are traditional associations to interpret in the context of the whole chart.

When favorable
Common associations include clear expression, a willingness to innovate, and independent thinking that offers a different perspective.
When unfavorable
Common associations include fault-finding, sharp speech, and resistance to restrictions, with expression that can lead to arguments.

Common Misunderstandings

How Does the Hurting Officer Differ from the Eating God?

In both relationships, the Day Master generates the other Stem’s element. Opposite yin-yang polarities give Hurting Officer; the same polarity gives Eating God. For a Jia (甲) Wood Day Master, Ding (丁) is Hurting Officer and Bing (丙) is Eating God.
