What Is Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai) in BaZi?

Also called: Pian Cai

Plain Explanation

Indirect Wealth is the Ten God relationship in which the Day Master controls the other Stem’s element and the two have the same yin-yang polarity.

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The Ten Gods use it as their reference point.

Example

Jia (甲) is Yang Wood, and Wu (戊) is Yang Earth. Wood controls Earth, and the two Stems have the same yin-yang polarity.

With Jia (甲) as the Day Master, Wu (戊) is called Indirect Wealth.

What It Is Used For

Indirect Wealth helps you examine the balance of strength between the Day Master and the element it controls. Consider whether the Day Master can sustain the energy expended in controlling that element, and how Wealth works with the other Ten Gods.

Favorable and Unfavorable Associations

Favorable means supporting the chart’s needs; unfavorable means hindering them. These are traditional associations to interpret in the context of the whole chart.

When favorable
Common associations include adaptability, building connections, and recognizing opportunities, with an ability to draw on outside resources.
When unfavorable
Common associations include chasing opportunities and unbalanced spending, with a tendency to seek quick results and overlook continuity.

Common Misunderstandings

How Does Indirect Wealth Differ from Direct Wealth?

In both relationships, the Day Master controls the other Stem’s element. The same yin-yang polarity gives Indirect Wealth; opposite polarities give Direct Wealth. For a Jia (甲) Wood Day Master, Wu (戊) is Indirect Wealth and Ji (己) is Direct Wealth.

Indirect Wealth Does Not Simply Mean a Windfall

Indirect Wealth names a relationship within the chart. This label alone cannot determine whether a person’s actual income is unexpected, additional, or unstable.
