What Is Nayin (Na Yin) in BaZi?
Also called: Na Yin
Plain Explanation
Nayin assigns an additional Five Element name to a complete pair in the sexagenary cycle. For example, Jia–Zi (甲–子) and Yi–Chou (乙–丑) are both called Metal in the Sea. This classification is distinct from the elements of the individual Stem and Branch.
Example
For Jia–Zi (甲–子), Jia (甲) itself belongs to Wood and Zi (子) itself belongs to Water, while the Nayin of the complete pair is Metal in the Sea. These are three different levels of classification, so they do not contradict one another.
| What Is Being Classified | Jia–Zi (甲–子) Example |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Stem element | Jia (甲) belongs to Wood |
| Earthly Branch element | Zi (子) belongs to Water |
| Nayin of the complete pair | Jia–Zi (甲–子) has Nayin Metal in the Sea |
How to Check
- 1
Look Up the Complete Stem–Branch Pair
To find the Nayin of Jia–Zi (甲–子), use that complete pair. Jia (甲) or Zi (子) alone cannot determine its Nayin.
- 2
Identify Which Pillar the Nayin Belongs To
The Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars each have a Stem–Branch pair and its own Nayin. Metal in the Sea in one pillar does not change the elements of the whole chart to Metal.
What It Is Used For
Nayin is used in traditional Stem–Branch classification and symbolic interpretation. One common use is to describe a birth year with a name such as “Metal in the Sea life.” It gives an element name for the complete pair and cannot replace the Day Master’s element or an analysis of the whole chart.
Common Misunderstandings
Year-Pillar Nayin Is Different from the Day Master’s Element
Calling someone a “Metal life” based on their birth year’s Nayin differs from identifying the Day Master by the Day Stem. If the Day Stem is Jia (甲), the Day Master remains Wood; a Metal Nayin in the Year Pillar does not make it a Metal Day Master.
A Nayin Name Alone Cannot Determine Strength or Favorability
Metal in the Sea and Fire in the Furnace are traditional symbolic names. A name alone cannot establish which elements are missing, how strong the Day Master is, or whether a particular year is favorable.
